Model: Seiko "Arnie" H558-5000

Year Produced: December 1982

Features:

The Pioneer. The world’s first analogue and digital display chronograph with an alarm. Being first at something always feel slightly underwhelming the more specific the parameters get - luckily, the H558-5009 ended up carving out its own claims to fame during its eight year production run.

The Name. Launched in 1982, just as Hollywood’s Golden Age of Action was warming up, this chunky hybrid diver earned a starring role on the wrist of Arnold Schwarzenegger. The watch - eventually nicknamed the “Arnie” - appears throughout Commando (1985) and Predator (1987). With Arnie’s penchant for short sleeves, the Seiko enjoyed more than its fair share of screen time.

The Build. The H558 wasn’t just for the silver screen either. In 1988, a Japanese climbing team wore it during an Everest ascent, after Seiko had proven the watch could function accurately in temperatures as low as -40°C (or -40°F, the magical temperature where °C and °F agree).
